GAMES and Party Ideas
* pin the tail on the zebra *.
*Use chalk to draw big animal footprints on your driveway and leading to your front door. Inside you can put construction paper animal prints that can guide the kids to the party area. If you're having the safari theme party in the evening, you can place tiki torches all around your yard and everyone will feel as if they're in Africa!
*Animal Charades: Have the kids prepare animal index cards during the icebreaker activities and use them for this game. Each kid gets a turn to pick a card. Then they must act out their creature (no words are allowed, but animal noises are encouraged) until the others shout out the animal and then everyone has to act out the same animal together. Get the adults to play this one. This party activity usually produces lots of laughs (and other interesting noises…)
*Giraffe Stretch: Pair up the kids. Give them a doughnut on a string and have one of them tie it around their waist so it hangs down reaching somewhere around their knees. Have their counterpart lie face up just beneath the hanging doughnut. Now, with only crouching and stretching (and no hands allowed) lets see who finishes the doughnut first. You can also have the doughnut hanging from a branch so that the kids have to stand on their tiptoes to reach it.
*Unshelled Peanut Hunt: Hide many unshelled peanuts all around your house and yard and tell the kids that they all are elephants who are looking for their peanuts. Give each kid a bucket or cup for the peanuts and have them walk around with their hands dangling like trunks. The winner is the elephant with the most peanuts and best posture, but it's not over yet… The next game is a continuation of this one...
*Peanut Eating Contest: The winner of the last game is the one with the most peanuts. Now, have the kids place the peanuts on the ground (or a table) in front of them and without using their hands, let's see who can peel and eat all their peanuts and finish first. Usually here, the kid who found the least peanuts in the last game is has the most chances to win this game.
*Guess Your Animal Game: Tape a paper with a picture or name of an animal on the kids' (and parents') back. The kids have to ask questions until they find out what their animal is.
*Roaring Contest: Pretty simple and if the kids get into it, its. Each kid roars his best lion roar and the best roars win awards (one for loudest, one for most scary, most original, etc.).
*Animal Jell-O Eating Contest: This contest gives the kids a way to show their animal instincts!! Make a bowl of Jell-O for each kid. Label each bowl with a wild animal, such as a lion, tiger, hippo, rhino, zebra, giraffe, etc. Lay a protective covering on the ground (or have this contest outside because it gets REAL messy!) and line the bowls up. Throughout the game, each kid must keep their hands on the ground beside their bowl. When the command is given to start, all contestants start eating their Jell-O without using their hands. The first animal to clean his or her bowl wins!
*Elephant's Peanut Relay: Mark a start and finish line. Then line the kids side by side at the starting point and place a peanut on the starting line in front of each kid. The object of the game is to see who can push the peanut to the finish line first… Easy? Oh, I forget to say that they can only use their noses!
*TELEPHONE: All the players sit in a row. The first player on the left side whispers something about an animal in his neighbor's ear. The latter transmits it to his neighbor's ear and so on. The first player on the right side announces aloud the word or the phrase that came to him. Then the player who started the game announces the word or the phrase with which he began the game. At times the distortion may be very funny! After each "call" the players must exchange their seats so as everybody can act as the first player on the left side and the first player on the right one.
*Monkey in the middle This is one of children's favorite animal games. Two children have to throw the ball to each other. The monkey is in the middle and has to try to catch the ball. If the monkey catches the ball the one who threw the ball last becomes the monkey in the middle. This game can also be played with more children. Children have to make a circle and throw the ball from one to another while the monkey, who is standing in the middle of the circle, tries to catch the ball.
*GO ON A SAFARI Hide several small jungle animal toys or beanie toys around the party area house, yard, garage etc. If you like to tell stories, start with a story about an adventure…Then send the kids off to find their wild animals. They'll keep what they find and add the items to a goodie bag.
*I'm going on a safari... A game for older kids. Sit the children in a circle. The first player says "I'm going on a safari,
and I'm going to pack _______ example: mosquito repellent, binoculars,
camera...then the next player says " I'm going on a safari and I'm gong to pack...repeat the first players item , then adds another. Play continues around the circle. Any player that forgets and item is out of the game.
*Jumping Giraffes: You'll need an apple with a stem for each child to play this game. Attach a string to the stem of the apple and hang it from a tree or a furniture fixture. Get the kids to bite on and eat their apples like giraffes. (The apples should hang low enough for children to bite on them.)
Party Favors
little compasses, little flashlights, mini cameras, wild animal bouncing balls, gummy worms, animal crackers, plastic sunglasses, animal tattoos, small plastic or stuffed jungle animals, toy binoculars, finger puppets, stickers
PARTY FOOD!
Here are some cool safari theme party food ideas.
(You can create a signpost with all the sorts of arrows pointing to the foods and describing what they are…)
*Animal-Striped Pizzas (you can be very creative with this one by making your own pizzas using alternates of white, yellow and orange cheese strips to look like animal print. You can also add toppings in alternates, like a row of olives in a diagonal, then a row of cheese, another row of olives, etc. for tasty animal stripes.)
*Pigs in blankets (hot dogs)
*French Flies (fries)
*Peanut Butter and Jellyphant sandwiches (Cut these out with an elephant cookie cutter)
*Toad-slaw (coleslaw)
*Crocodile eye balls and guts (yes, I know this sounds gross, but the kids love this spaghetti with meatballs.)
*Monkey Meal (Peel a banana and put it in a hot dog roll…. Then spread peanut butter and maybe a bit of honey and you'll be amazed at how tasty the monkey sandwich is!)
*Snake dogs (Make multiple diagonal cuts into each hot dogs, not quite all the way through, and fill the slits with ketchup, mustard and relish. The kids love eating these "snakes".)
Safari Theme Party Drinks:
*Alligator-ade (green Gatorade!!)
*Swamp Juice - Kids will be mystified when they witness your power to turn ordinary green Gatorade into a steamy swamp! Start with green punch and after you've placed a filled glass in front of each kid, add a few Pop Rocks candies to each one. Since this candy is processed with carbon dioxide, it will crackle, pop, and split when it comes into contact with the green punch. AWESOME!
Tip: Make frozen ice cubes with raisins in them so it looks like flies are floating in their safari juices. Kids just love this!
Safari Theme Party Treats:
*Unshelled peanuts
*Gummy worms
*Animal crackers
*Animal fruit snacks
*Any kind of animal-shaped foods
*Fire Ants (plain or chocolate covered raisins)
*Bugs on a Log: Take a celery stick, smother with peanut butter, and add little ants (raisins). Another variation is to dip a pretzel rod halfway into peanut butter and roll in chocolate chips.
This is a fun activity for little children and a treat that can be instantly consumed. And, it's even HEALTHY!
*Worms in Dirt: crumbled Oreo cookies topped with gummy snakes.
*Cheese Bugs: Slice cubes of cheese and add thin, curling snake
*cupcakes with colored sugar and animal crackersacks (like the type seen in the photo).
